The stitch we will be learning today is called the cottages stitch. The name derives from the fact that the pattern created looks like a series of houses in a row, all tidy and eagerly waiting to be lived in! For us, home is a coffee pot always ready on the stove for when someone comes to visit, it’s dogs wagging their tails to greet you, and it’s fresh cut flowers arranged perfectly in large vases. And you? What does home mean for you?

This stitch is perfect for decorating the front of a sweater or even for a nice thick scarf. We have chosen Piuma yarn, in the colour Honey, however, on the store you can find more than 50 variations. The only problem being it will be difficult to choose just one!

Tutorial: how to knit the cottages stitch

MATERIALS

We work off 18 base stitches.

Row 1: *purl 2 and knit 6*, repeat from * to * for the entire row and finish with purl 2
row 2: knit 2, purl 1, knit 1, purl 4, knit 2, purl 4, knit 1, purl 1, knit 2
row 3: purl 2, knit 1, purl 2, knit 3, purl 2, knit 3, purl 2, knit 1, purl 2
row 4: *knit 2, purl 2*, repeat from * to * for the entire row and finish with knit 2
row 5: Purl 2, knit 3, purl 2, knit 1, purl 2, knit 1, purl 2, knit 3, purl 2
row 6: Knit 2, purl 4, knit 1, purl 1, knit 2, purl 1, knit 1, purl 4, knit 2
row 7: work as instructed for the first row
row 8: *knit 2, purl 6*, repeat from * to * for the entire row and finish with knit 2
row 9: repeat from row 1.
